Fla. Man to Smoke 115,000th Joint

Feat earns him world record for cannabis consumption

(Newser) – He set the bar high and smoked the competition. Irvin Rosenfeld, a 56-year-old stockbroker from Fort Lauderdale, will toke his way into the record books today by smoking his 115,000th joint. The best part: It's completely legal. "Yep, provided by Uncle Sam," Rosenfeld told NBC Miami. "They grow it for me."

Rosenfeld, who suffers from a painful bone disorder, has received government-approved weed since 1982; he was grandfathered into a federal drug program after medicinal marijuana programs were cut 10 years later. That's 300 joints every 25 days for 27 years—10 to 12 per day. "The first thing I do every morning is smoke two joints," he says. "Then another on my drive to work." It's not as dangerous as you might think—Rosenfeld says he's never gotten high on the stuff: "No munchies, no munchies, nothing other people get. A lot of patients don't get high."

(NEWSER) - A Florida millionaire's yacht came ashore this week—without the millionaire. Fort Lauderdale police are hunting for Brazilian-born Guma Aguiar after his empty yacht beached with the ignition running and lights on. The Coast Guard suspended its search yesterday after 70 hours hunting for the missing man in vain, and Aguiar's mother filed a motion in court to take control of his $100 million fortune, reports the Sun Sentinel . Ellen Aguiar's petition says her son "disappeared as the result of mental derangement" or disappeared "under circumstances indicating that he may have died, either naturally, accidentally or at the hands of another." (NEWSER) - After serving nearly 30 years in federal prison for his role in a marijuana-smuggling ring, Robert Platshorn is still pushing pot—but this time it's political. The 69-year-old has founded a group called the Silver Tour that aims to convince seniors of the benefits of medical marijuana, the Wall Street Journal finds. "Nobody in the marijuana movement is talking to seniors," who are more likely than other groups to vote against legalization, says Platshorn, but "seniors are the only damn people that go to the polls."
